Belisha Beacons

We have all now become quite accustomed to seeing the black and white posts with an amber coloured globe at the top. They are placed at certain busy parts of the main thoroughfare of our towns to denote where pedestrians should cross the road. If we fail to observe them and dash blindly across anywhere, we not only risk being knocked down by a passing motor, but also place the driver of the vehicle in a position of danger, as in trying to avoid us he may collide with another car. Some silly people, yes, and selfish people, dash across the road without looking for, or waiting until they reach a beacon, and not only endanger themselves, but others also.

Some boys and girls are like these folks, they have not sufficient patience to stick to their sums at school, they want to become clever without the drudgery of learning elementary things, and instead of persevering, want to find a short cut. This never pays, it is always better to go on steadily, and presently they will come to a place where they can pass over to higher and more advanced things.

Perhaps a boy or girl wants to become a clever musician, and commences to learn, but tires of continually practising scales and studies, and wishes to dash across the road, and become a good performer without plodding on. It is wiser to wait until you come to the place, the time, when you are proficient, and then cross to accomplished performance. If we want to become like Jesus, we shall have to follow in His footsteps, and cross the roads of life where He crossed them. He shows us the way, and has given us beacons to look for ; and as we read about His life and deeds in the New Testament we shall see them. He shows us the way, and if we walk as He walked we shall come to the place where He would have us cross to higher and nobler things, and be where He wants us to be. If we go our own way and cross where we like, we shall be injured by sin on the highway of life, and our life spoilt. He said, "Follow Me. I am the Way."
