Names
We often wonder how the names of people, towns, and places first came into being. In London there is a station called Charing Cross; a junction of roadways in Birkenhead is also known by the same name. This name may also be
found in other towns. How did this name originate? Well, we must delve into our history books and turn to the reign of Edward the First, and we shall find that his wife's name was Eleanor, and that she died at Lincoln. It was decided to convey her body to London. The coach which carried the coffin was, of
course, in those days, drawn by horses, therefore it was necessary to stop at certain places for the purpose of
resting and changing the horses, etc. At every place where a halt was made, a cross was set up as a memorial
of the Queen, and the last stopping place before entering the City of London was at a position near where the well-known railway station was, much later, erected. They called it "Charing Cross"—"Charing" being a contraction of "Chere-reine," which translated means "Dear Queen."
There was One who walked this earth who left memorials of Himself everywhere He went; not memorials of stone, but here He left a man leaping and walking who once was lame. In another place a man able to see all things clearly, who was, before he met Jesus, blind from his birth. As we trace our Savior's journey through the Holy Land, we can see memorials of His love and power in the hearts and homes of many people. Everywhere, by the Galilean Sea, by the roadside, in the villages and towns, memorials of His love were left behind.
He still journeys all over the world, from the cold lands of the arctic regions to the hottest parts of Africa and India, as well as China and Japan, His memorials can still be seen and recognized. Churches, Chapels, Mission Halls, etc., all show that Christ has been present where these buildings are found. Wherever there is a person who loves and serves the Lord Jesus Christ, there "Jesus is." In every part of the world memorials of Jesus can be found. Boys and girls, give your hearts and lives to Jesus, and follow and serve Him faithfully. Do what you know He would like you to do, so that others watching you may be reminded of Christ. Be one of His "memorials!"
In the Acts of the Apostles, the fourth chapter, and the 13th verse, we read: "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John . . . they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus." These Apostles reminded the people of Jesus by the way they spoke and acted; they were His memorials. Ask God to help you to be to others a "memorial" of Jesus.
