Be Thankful You Are Not Satisfied
Open you Bible to Luke, Chapter 18, and read verses 9 to 14.
Jesus tells a story about two men. The Pharisee thought that he was very good. He thanked God that he was not like other people. The other man was a hated tax collector. He had no friends. He would cheat his fellow men when he had the chance. He asked God to forgive him.
Now it is good to think well of yourself to a certain extent. The Bible does not teach us to hate ourselves. It warns us against thinking we are better than we really are. A Christian never brags about how good he is. He is always looking for a way to improve himself.
The tax collector was very humble when he prayed. He asked God to be merciful to him because he knew he was a sinner and he knew that God knew it tool Jesus said that this man's prayer had a much better chance of being heard and answered by God than the proud man's.
Are you ever completely satisfied with yourself? Oh, there may be times like your birthday when everyone is nice to you or when you work out a problem in arithmetic that no one else in the class was able to do. But pretty soon, if you are a right person, you will not sit back and ride on past glories, but you will want to improve. That is a sign that you are growing.
Each new thing we learn opens doors to more things we shall want to know about. When we become dissatisfied with what we already have accomplished, then we reach out to new and wider fields. We must never allow ourselves to stop searching. Each new day should teach us something new about God. Ask God to keep you dissatisfied with yourself. Promise him you will never stop searching for new truths about him.
