How Do I Get Through to God?

"Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

We are constantly being told that we should seek God's will and do it. We are advised that we must let God speak to us. We are reminded that God will guide our thoughts and actions if we will but let him. But we know that God does not speak to us in a loud clear voice. He doesn't point with his staff or light our path with a blinding glare. How do I get through to him?

Here are some suggestions on how to receive his messages:

  1. Go off by yourself and be quiet for a few minutes. Shut everything out of your mind as much as you can.

  2. Think about God. Think of him as being everywhere. Think about how he created the earth and the universe, and how perfectly it runs without a bit of help from anyone—only by his power. Think of God as the giver of life and all that we have.

  3. Repeat familiar passages of Scripture.

  4. Think about your problem or whatever it is that you want his help with. Don't tell God how you think he ought to solve your problem or answer your prayer. Just lay your problem before God. Forget your own solutions. They have already failed, haven't they?

  5. Know that God can and will answer you. Remember some of the things he has done for you in the past. Thank him for past help and favors. Be patient. Wait. Listen.

  6. Remember that Jesus said, when you pray, believe that you receive and you shall receive. "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive" (Matthew 21:22).

Thank you, God, for listening to me. Now I will listen to you.
