How Do I Know God Is There?
When you say your prayers at night, or at any other time for that matter, do you ever get the feeling that your words just go into orbit? Doesn't it make you feel just a little bit foolish to talk to a Spirit asking him for things like more allowance money, a summer job, a ride to the lake, a new bike, or something to wear to the picnic next week? How do you know God is there listening to you?
Well, you don't know. That is, you can't prove he's there listening to you in the same way you can prove your mother hears you. But somehow you know he just has to be there. If he isn't, then the whole world and all life is just one great big joke on us.
Look at it this way. You borrow Grandma's specter and try them on. "How can you ever see through these
things?" you exclaim. Pretty awful, aren't they? But they fit Grandma's eyes perfectly. They are focused for
her eyes. The doctor tried a good many different glasses on her before he arrived at the ones that really suited her. Then Grandma could see as well as anyone.
We have to find out the best way to know about God for our own selves. We have to try different ways. There are the Bible, missionary stories, our parents, doctor, and minister to help us. But all they can do is to help us find him; the final step is up to us. We must believe that he is there.
We must be satisfied that he does hear our prayers. We just have to know these things. Then when we get the right "glasses" on we can bring him into focus.
Be patient with me, O God, until I find the right way to discover where you are. I am beginning to find it.
