How Do We Know When We Are Right?

For hundreds of years after the crucifixion of Jesus people searched for his cross. Every once in
a while someone would claim that he had found a piece of the true cross. At one time there were enough of these pieces in one German cathedral to make a cross and a half! But they kept right on searching.

There is a beautiful legend about Saint Helena who in her search is supposed to have found three crosses. One of them was believed to be the one on which Jesus died. Helena's task was to discover which one was the true cross of Christ.

So she gathered together some sick people and brought them to the place where the crosses stood. She made them touch each of the crosses. The one that had the power of healing, she said, would be the true cross of Jesus.

Of course, we today know that Jesus' cross has long ago disappeared and no one knows where it is. But we still believe that Jesus is alive. How do we know he is alive? How do we know that he was really the Son of God? How do we know that his was the true way?

We know because his way works where all other ways have tailed. We know that Christ lives because of the power he gives to those who believe he does. We know because the people who believe in him are the people who are doing things to build a better world where peace, love, good will, and friendship will rule. We know because his way works. It produces miracles of power in those who believe.

In your prayer today, thank God that we have so many ways of knowing that his is the true religion.
