Not for Sale

One day Tim met the high school football coach on the street. "Say, Bub," grinned the big man, "I don't know who you are yet, but I hope to see you out on the football field in a few years." That sent Tim into a flip because he hoped the same thing.

Tim thought he was the "most" after that for a while. Then one day the teacher told the science class that their bodies were made up of about ninety-seven cents worth of chemicals which they could buy at the corner drugstore, and that the rest was water. This made the future football hero feel very unimportant until the teacher explained that those chemicals and water were not the real "you," though.

There is a lot more to us than a few smelly chemicals. No combination of drugs can work out a math problem, enjoy a sunset, figure out a football play, throw a curve ball, sing a solo, play the piano, or twirl a baton without that something extra that is you. And you cannot be bought for either ninety-seven cents or ninety-seven million dollars.

We get to feeling pretty unimportant sometimes. We pull a crazy boner and feel very silly. Even when our parents give us a long hard look for something we didn't even know we did, we wonder if life is worth it. But it is. Really! For God loves us and he puts life into those chemicals that no one else can put in. He has made all things for us and given us the right to come to him and ask for what is ours to have.

No, we are not for sale. God has put a price tag on us that is out of our reach—the price of his own Son.

Thank you, God, for all the nice things you have done for me.
