Pass the Mustard

During history exam, Miss Brenner noticed that several of the girls had cards propped up in front of them on their desks. But as she walked quietly up and down the aisles between the desks no one seemed the least bit disturbed. They did not try to hide their cards. She wrote down the names of these girls and asked them to remain after the exam.

"May I see those cards?" she asked after the rest had gone outside. The girls readily handed them over to her. Imagine her puzzlement as she read the same thing on each card: PLEASE PASS THE MUSTARD.

She asked for an explanation, and the girls were happy to tell her that they belonged to the "Mustard Seed Club." The idea of the club came from Matthew 17:20 which reads: "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove: and nothing shall be impossible unto you." Whenever they faced a difficult task, they told Miss Brenner, they prayed, "Please pass the mustard." She had to admit that these girls got the best grades in the class.

Now Jesus hardly expected us to move mountains from one place to another. But he wanted to assure his followers that faith can do mighty things for them. Not all mounĀtains are of soil and stone. Some are made up of despair, doubt, crime, and lies. If we believe that we can do all things through Christ who gives us the strength we can remove these mountains that weigh heavily upon our lives. If it is right he will help us.

When the going gets tough just ask God to "please pass the mustard." He will know what you mean.
