Seen Any Giants Lately?
As a child, Jack had the wildest imagination in the neighborhood. Whenever he came in from outdoors he brought back tales of lions, tigers, and elephants hiding in the weeds out back. At night he would come face to face with giants. Wild beasts he could usually handle. The giants would send him home screaming.
Kid stuff, you say. Yes, it is. But, at the time, those things were very real to Jack. And the sad part of our story is that Jack, and many like him, never completely get over seeing and believing in these monsters. We still create giants in our minds and allow them to scare us.
There's the rival football team, for instance. When they come pounding out onto the field every player looks at least twenty-five pounds heavier than the largest man on the home team. The boys of the visiting basketball team seem to loom six inches taller than the home boys. Then the referees always seem to favor our rivals. The rooters in the home bleachers see dozens of fouls made by our opponents that the "refs" miss, but the referees seem to call them on our boys! These are some of our "giants."
Some people outgrow their giants, and others do not. If the follower of Christ thinks he sees a giant he is certain that he can defeat him. One person in the company of Christ can perform wonders. Caleb and Joshua were sure they saw giants in the Promised Land, but they were just as sure that with God's help these creatures could be overcome (Numbers 13:26-33).
It is natural sometimes to be afraid of imagined dangers. But if we trust God we can bring these giants down to our own size.
Ask God to help you see these giants through his eyes.
