Take a Good Long Look

It was an odd-looking card. The heavy black marks on it seemed to follow the pattern of a man's face, but you couldn't see what man. The instructions said to stare at the card in bright light for a full minute. Then look at a blank sheet of paper. The "optical wonder" of it was that as you stared at the blank sheet of paper the face of Abraham Lincoln began to appear.

Walk out of your well-lighted home some night and immediately look up into the sky. At first you will see only the brightest stars. But the longer you look, more stars begin to appear as your eyes became accustomed to the darkness. The longer you look, the more plainly things begin to appear. The opposite is true when you walk from darkness into a brightly lighted room.

There are many wonders about sight. But these experiments just go to prove that there is much more to be seen than at first meets the eye. We never see all there is to be seen at any one time. On a visit to Grandma's when we were five we saw a lot of things we never forgot, but five years later they looked a lot different. The buildings were closer together. The rooms were smaller, and there were a lot of "changes" in five years, even though Grandma didn't change things very fast.

That is one of the thrills of life. Not only are we continually seeing new sights and having new experiences, but the old sights and experiences take on new meanings. It pays to take a good look because our eyes can play tricks on us. But welcome each new sight and experience as coming from a never-ending source of delight.

Open my eyes that I may see the glorious things you have prepared for me.
