You Are Blazing a Trail

The old lamplighter was a very picturesque person. His job was monotonous and it didn't require much skill, but what he did made people happy and was remembered in songs and poems.

From an upstairs window people would watch him make his way from lamp to lamp. Hardly anyone saw his face, for he worked in the dark; but they could follow him by the light he left behind. He left a trail of light as he made his way up the street. His name wasn't important to most people. He was just "The Lamplighter." What he did was important.

In the early days of the Christian church, Peter and John were known only to a small group of people. But their works were well known. It was written about them that when people "saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus" (Acts 4:13).

We all hope to leave some kind of noteworthy mark behind us in this world. We should hate to think of never having accomplished anything worthwhile. Some built great pyramids. Some left huge statues of themselves.

How shall you be remembered? Are you aiming to become a great scientist, military leader, poet, social worker, or business man or woman? Will people remember you because of some mark you have left behind you? Or maybe you would like first of all to be remembered as one who walked with God. Pyramids, buildings, and statues—even reputations—will tumble in time. But the trail of light that you will leave behind you because you have walked with Jesus will never fade. Ask God to help you blaze a trail for others to follow.
